Paying homage to the Seching (Earth) and Donyi (Sun) and praying for the well being of mankind, members of the Tagin community on Wednesday celebrated Si-Donyi festival with traditional fervor and gaiety in Arunachal Pradesh.

The celebration witnessed cultural extravaganza which included Hoi and Ponung, mega dance, Konyi Bukar (mock fight), and ritualistic sacrifice at Yugang Renam (alter), etc. This year Koyum Dui was the main priest, who was selected from a probable 55 priests from the community.

Greeting the people, UD and land management parliamentary secretary Techi Kaso emphasized on the role of elders in passing down the customs and traditions to the younger generation. Kaso, who was the chief guest, also advised youths to participate in such festivals, so that the traditions passed down by forefathers since time immemorial is not lost.

Supporting the call for continuing age-old customs and traditions, civil supplies and consumer affairs parliamentary secretary Nyamar Karbak urged youths to give due importance to their respective dialects. A tribal youth may excel in Hindi and English, but if he/she cannot speak his own dialect than he/she fails the community, said Karbak.

Si-Donyi may be the festival of the Tagin community but its significance is for entire mankind as the festival is celebrated for the well-being of mankind, said home minister Tanga Byaling on the sidelines of the festival. Extending wishes to all, Byaling appealed to all to maintain peace and harmony.

Earlier, a Nyibu-Naam (priest house) was also inaugurated and Tagin folktale titled “The Story of Himbin Techi”, a comic book, was released by the chief guest. The Mithun donors, former chairperson and secretaries of Si-Donyi festival committee were also felicitated.
