Altogether 15 distinguished personalities from the Northeast have been named for the coveted Padma awards on the eve of Republic Day on Saturday.

The awards were announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi on Saturday.

Internationally acclaimed boxer MC Mary Kom from Manipur will be conferred the country’s second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan, while former Nagaland Chief Minister SC Jamir, who has also served as Governor of a number of states, including Odisha and Goa, has been named for Padma Bhushan.

Five personalities from Assam have been conferred the Padma Shri award. They are celebrated danseuse Indira PP Bora, writer educationist Lil Bahadur Chettri, veterinarian Dr Kushal Konwar Sarma, who is an expert in elephant treatment, scholar Jogendra Nath Phukan and physician Dr Ravi Kannan R.

Litterateur Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi of Arunachal Pradesh, who writes in Assamese, was also named for Padma Shri award.

The others from the Northeast who have won Padma Shri awards are footballer Oinam Bembem Devi (Manipur), social worker Sathyanarayan Mundayoor (Arunachal Pradesh), archer Tarundeep Rai (Sikkim), journalist Pu Lalbiakthanga Pachuau and social worker and freedom fighter C Kamlova (both from Mizoram), and writer Benichandra Jamatia (Tripura).
