One soldier killed, two injured from Assam Regiment in Pak firing

In the recent exchange of heavy firing and shelling along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir one Indian Army personnel was killed and two others were injured.

Pakistan Army resorted to ceasefire violation on the LoC in Poonch Sector on 13 June. Indian Army responded strongly to the enemy fire and three Indian Army personnel were injured in the Pakistani firing and were immediately evacuated to the Command Hospital in Udhampur, where one of them succumbed to injuries, said reports.

According to reports, 29-year-old Sepoy Lungambui Abonmei died in the shelling, while sepoys Lienkhothien Senghon and Tangsoik Kwianiungar were injured in Shahpur-Kirni sector. All the three soldiers belong to the 10th Battalion of Assam Regiment.

Reports further said that this is the third fatality in the Pakistani firing and shelling on forward posts and villages in the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri this month. Media quoted officials saying that the latest firing and shelling from across the border took place in Shahpur-Kerni sector on Saturday night, drawing strong retaliation by the Indian Army.

On June 4, Havaldar P Mathiazhagan fell to Pakistani firing in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district, while on June 10, Naik Gurcharan Singh lost his life in a similar incident in Rajouri sector.
As reported in the Hindustan Times, Lt Col Devender Anand, the defence spokesperson, said the Pakistan army resorted to an unprovoked ceasefire violation on LoC in Poonch sector on Saturday.“Own troops responded strongly to the enemy fire. In the incident, Sepoy Lungambui Abonmei was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries,” Anand said.

“Sepoy Lungambui Abonmei was a brave, highly motivated and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” he added.

Indian and Pakistani troops have been exchanging near daily gunfire and mortar shelling along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.
