Assam Election 2021: Former Congress MLA Rahul Roy Files Nomination Paper as Independent Candidate

Former Congress MLA from Algapur constituency of Hailakandi district Rahul Roy submitted his nomination papers on Wednesday as an independent candidate from Udharbondh Legislative Assembly Constituency of Cachar district.

Interacting with the media after filing his papers Roy said that even though he was reluctant to contest the polls, however, his decision changed after the people of the Udharbond constituency showed their trust in him.

He said that he would speak for the people in the Assembly and carry on working for the welfare of the people if he is elected again.

It may be mentioned here that Roy’s father Gautam Roy is also a veteran politician who was a minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government.

Gautam Roy had resigned from the Congress and has filed nomination papers as a BJP candidate from the Katigorah constituency.

On being asked to speak about his father, Roy said that they both are two different individuals with different political ideologies.

“I respect him as he is my father, but as politicians, he belongs to a different party and I don’t belong to any party. I have standing up for the people of Udharbond who have been deprived for the past several decades,” Roy added.

It may be mentioned here that Rahul Roy had resigned from the Congress part in 2019 supporting the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
