Padmeswar Doley is a popular name in Assam politics. He was once the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) MLA from Majuli and also served as a minister.

However, as AGP lost repeated elections Doley also parted ways from the party and joined Congress. But when he was overlooked and the Congress did not give him a ticket, Doley resigned from the party and joined BJP in 2004 and contested from Majuli as a saffron party candidate.

However, as he lost the elections, Doley again went back to AGP but resigned again after the party overlooked him and denied him a ticket. Doley then contested as an independent candidate, but he was defeated again at the hands of Congress’ Rajib Lochan Pegu.

Before the 2016 Assam Assembly polls, Doley again joined BJP, where he was not given much importance.

As the 2021 Assam Assembly election days drew closer and a few regional parties were floated, Doley joined the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), expecting a ticket from the party to contest from Majuli. But he was overlooked again- which was completely unexpected by him.

He resigned from AJP and then filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate only to withdraw his nomination later and joining the BJP once again.

“I am happy to be back again in BJP. Our Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has been doing tremendous work and his farsightedness and visionary works have impressed me immensely,” Doley said while addressing the media in Garmur on Friday.

“I have been speaking with the AJP leadership regarding my candidature from Majuli for the past six months and I was assured that I would be AJP’s face from here. However, at the last moment, they decided against my name. The AJP candidate has bought the ticket by paying a hefty amount to the AJP leadership,” Doley alleged.
