The northeastern Indian city Guwahati must have contributed to the Black Carbon (BC) pollutants that are responsible for glacier melting in the Himalayas.

As per a report, 35 out of the world’s 50 most polluted cities are in India, with Guwahati being ranked in the 40th spot, a new report stated on March 16.

The report was prepared by Swiss organisation IQAir and its results are based on PM2.5 (Particulate matter) data from 106 countries, which is measured by ground-based monitoring stations, most of which are operated by government agencies.

Particulate matter or PM is a mixture of solids and liquid droplets floating in the air, some are released directly from a specific source, while others are formed in complicated chemical reactions in the atmosphere.

As per the report, at the beginning of 2021, Guwahati was experiencing a period of poor air quality with a US AQI index of 179 which classifies it as “unhealthy” according to recommended figures by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The concentration of the pollutant PM2.5 was recorded as 109.2 µg/m³, (microns per cubic metre). The current Air Quality Index (AQI) of Guwahati is 201.
