Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Geetika Kakati seems to be in an advantageous position at the Sipajhar assembly constituency in the Darrang district.

Kakati, who was the former president of AGP’s Sipajhar unit of Mahila Parishad, resigned from the party and joined the newly floated AJP after the BJP-AGP alliance decided to field Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi from the constituency ignoring Kakati.

“Kakati is a known face in the constituency and she has a massive following. She joining AJP puts the new party at an advantageous position,” said Paplu Sarma, a resident of the constituency.

“Apart from being highly educated, she is also straightforward and fearless. She has strong leadership qualities, which I feel is her plus point,” Sarma added.

It may be mentioned here that Kakati is pitted against Congress’ Kuldeep Baruah, BJP’s Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi and seven other candidates.

“We were expecting that the Sipajhar assembly seat would be given to AGP, but it wasn’t and this disappointed us a lot. We will extend our support to Geetika Kakati and vote for her,” said an AGP member seeking anonymity.

“There are rumours that several disgruntled AGP and BJP members have been secretly pitting against their respective parties and will support the AJP candidate. If there is even an iota of truth, then BJP will have a tough time,” said Maina Pathak, a resident of Sipajhar.
