TFFI Recommends Sharath Kamal For Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) has recommended Sharath Kamal – the nine-time National Champion for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.

Kamal is now all set to compete in the Tokyo Olympics, his fourth straight Olympics appearance of his spanning career.

He has become the first Indian paddler to be a recipient of Padma Shri in 2019.

“He is a deserving candidate for Khel Ratna. Hope he gets his due.” – asserted the TTFI advisor MP Singh told PTI.

While, Kamal’s former teammate turned coach, Soumyadeep Roy has been nominated for the Dronacharya Award.

According to the PTI report, the nominations for the Arjuna Award include the name of Olympic-bound Sutirtha Mukherjee. Meanwhile, other athletes include – Ayhika Mukherjee and Manav Thakkar.

Sharath Kamal won his first national title in 2003 and his first international medal at the 2004 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships.

With four Commonwealth Games golds, two Asian Games medals, three Olympic Games appearances, and two International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Pro Tour titles under his belt, Sharath Kamal is arguably the best Indian table tennis player in history.

Sharath’s father, Srinivasa Rao, and uncle Muralidhar Rao had also played the sport in their prime and had then shifted to coaching youngsters.
