On Friday, September 17, the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has flagged off 5 Inland Waterways Transport (IWT) vessels at Lachit Ghat in Fancy Bazaar, Guwahati.
Among these 5 IWT vessels, 2 are rescue ships while the remaining 3 are passenger ships.
Named as – MV Sonai, MV Lohit, MV Pratima, SDB Vikrant and SDB Vishal, these ships will be pressed into services in Guwahati, Dhubri and Majuli.
During the inaugural event, Sarma said that state government will purchase another 5 Ro-pax ships.
Besides, it will also provide financial assistance of Rs 90 crore for double engine ferries.
However, a fitness exam of the ferries will be conducted prior to its operation, the CM added.
The CM further added that IWT vessels will improve institutional framework for water transport & develop ferry services.
