The accused of the IIT Guwahati rape case- whom the Gauhati High Court had granted bail calling him a “future asset” of the state- was expelled from the institution.
It may be mentioned here that the police on April 3, 2021, had arrested the 21-year-old student for allegedly raping a fellow female student of the institute on March 28, 2021.
The accused, however, was granted bail by the Gauhati High Court in August this year citing that he was a “future asset of the state”. At the same time, the court had held that there was a prima facie case against the accused.
The judgement drew flak from various sections of society and many termed the judgment as “disappointing”.
According to a The Times of India news report, expelling the student from the institution the IIT-Guwahati stated that the reported act of “gross indiscipline” perpetrated by the accused, violating the students’ code of conduct, “had to be strictly dealt” with by the institute.
It may be mentioned here that the IIT-Guwahati Senate had a special meeting on September 6, 2021, in the presence of institute director TG Sitharam. In the meeting, the Senate decided to approve the September 3 decision of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC) to terminate the rape accused student from the institute.
“The Dean of Students Affairs (DOSA) informed the Senate that the student has been granted bail by the Gauhati high court on August 13. The court in the order stated that there was a clear prima facie case against the accused petitioner and the investigation of the case was completed,” The Times of India report stated quoting the report.
“We welcome the decision to terminate the rape accused student from the institute. This should go as a strong message to all,” said an IIT-G student seeking anonymity while speaking to Northeast Today.
