Sikkim : Republic Day Celebrations Altered Amid COVID-19 Surge

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, several mutations and variants have continues to emerge with “Omicron Variant” which is believed to incorporate of a high transmissibility rate, thereby escalating tensions among medical fraternities. In a bid to prevent the spurt in COVID-19 cases, the Sikkim Government have decided to celebrate the Republic Day this year on a smaller scale duly adhering by the COVID-19 guidelines.

This was announced during a meeting chaired today by Chief Secretary S.C Gupta for discussing the preparations of Republic Day celebrations.

Meanwhile, the meeting attended by Heads of Departments, senior officers of all line Departments, and senior officers of the Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) decided that the State level celebrations will be held at Manan Kendra Gangtok. The draft programme was discussed in detail and each Department was assigned their respective roles.

It was further informed that the celebration at Districts and Sub-divisions will follow the same pattern as the state level event.
