A local court of Tripura sent six nationals of Bangladesh to seven days judicial custody on Tuesday after Tripura police arrested them for illegally entering Indian territory on Monday’s late night.

Acting on a tip off, South Tripura district’s Belonia police station staff led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Smriti Kanta Bardhan at around 9 PM on Monday night carried out a raid at Kalikapur village near the international border of India and Bangladesh.

The police official said “We have detained six citizens of Bangladesh during the raid. They took shelter in a house near the border. During preliminary interrogation, they claimed that they are Bangladeshi nationals, but failed to show us any valid documents. They also claimed that they came here in search of work.”

“Accordingly, we have arrested them under the Indian Passport Act. On Monday, we produced these six citizens of Bangladesh in Belonia sub-divisional judicial magistrate court”, he added.

The Bangladeshi nationals were identified as Kirtan Das, Himan Das, Sourabh Das, Kaushik Das, Biswajit Das and Subrata Das, who are reported to be the residents of Sunamganj in Bangladesh.

The court has sent them to jail custody for seven days.
