Nagaland’s state capital – Kohima is among the two Indian cities which has selected to attend the coveted ‘Urban 95 Academy Residency Programme’ in London School of Economics (Cohort 2); slated to be held from October 10-14, 2022.
Kohima is recognized for its ‘Nurturing Neighbourhoods Challenge’ (NNC) under the Union Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), which aims to implement a host of child-friendly programmes.
As per the NNC, Kohima has adopted a new vision to see the city from the perspectives of newborns, toddlers, and caretakers.
In the first phase of the NNC, Kohima Smart City Development Limited (KSCDL) conducted five trial projects and two major junctions across three neighbourhoods of Kohima; within the course of seven months.
A few of the pilot initiatives included the creation of pocket parks, kid-friendly bus stops, redesigning of key intersections, and adding play areas within government schools and anganwadis.
However, for the 2nd phase, the KSCDL and Kohima Municipal Council have already inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Resources Institute (WRI) India for scaling-up projects.
Under the 2nd phase, KSCDL KSCDL hopes to create a pocket park in each Kohima neighbourhood, make roadways and intersections safe for everyone, improve government amenities for young children and their caregivers.
