Agartala, September 23, 2022 : A scandalous chapter has been witnessed in the premises of Tripura’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Mahavidyalaya at Sonamura under Sepahijala district where the College’s principal along with few faculties were beaten up by unruly students on Thursday over an allegation against the Principal for not paying hefty amount to organise “Freshers’ Welcome” programme.
However, sources from Sonamura claimed that the students had become aggressive from Wednesday as they alleged that local leaders were not invited whereas Tripura’s Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma was scheduled to inaugurate Bio-Tech Club at the college premises. On Thursday, those students entered the Principal’s office and attacked him when male faculties went to save him, they were also beaten up. Later on with the intervention of Nagar Panchayat members, police station staff, and local leaders, the matter was resisted to a certain extent.
It is reported that the Deputy Chief Minister Dev Varma was scheduled to inaugurate the Bio-Tech Club in Kazi Nazrul Islam Mahavidyalaya at Sonamura on Wednesday. The Principal, faculties and students from a couple of weeks earlier were preparing for this programme and as the students were local, they were repeatedly asked about inviting local leaders on behalf of the College authority. Few names were suggested and they were also invited. But on the day of inauguration, some unruly students of the college closed the main entrance with bamboo and said to restrict Deputy CM from entering the college premises. However, the matter was abated after talking with those students. Thereafter, Deputy CM Dev Varma reached the college and inaugurated it.
The aggression of the students did not stop there. On Thursday, a few students were sitting on benches in front of the college building and were collecting subscriptions from college students for organizing a “Freshers’ Welcome” programme. The principal along with faculties reached the college and asked the students not to collect subscriptions. Thereafter, the students went to the principal’s office and asked him to provide a hefty amount. As the principal refused to do so, students harassed him with abusive language. After a couple of minutes, one of the aggressive students who held the blockade in front of College’s entrance on Wednesday last arrived at the principal’s office and assaulted him. When the faculties went to save the principal, they were also not spared. Later, the other faculties in the college called the Sonamura Nagar Panchayat member and local leaders, and the matter was solved to certain extent. But before the arrival of police, the unruly students flee away from the spot.
Sonamura SDPO Banoj Biplab Das said that no case has been filed with the police station and the matter has been solved mutually.
