Meghalaya Mountaineer – Tiklu Jyrwa; Among Others ‘Missing’ In Uttarakhand Avalanche

A climber from Meghalaya – Tiklu Jyrwa, alongwith a team of 41 mountaineers was reported missing in the avalanche that struck Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand on Tuesday.

Jyrwa – a member of the Meghalaya Sport Climbing & Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA), was listed as one of the trainee mountaineers and instructors from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, who were reported ‘missing’ in the avalanche, while returning from Mount Draupadi Ka Danda II.

Besides, rescue operations are underway and the Meghalaya Government are in constant touch with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Uttarakhand.

Jyrwa was selected earlier this year to participate in a basic mountaineering course at the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) at Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh.

Taking to Twitter, the Meghalaya Chief Minister – Conrad Sangma wrote “Hoping & Praying for the safety of Mr. Tiklu Jyrwa a member of Meghalaya Sport Climbing & Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA), who along with a team of 41 mountaineers was hit by an avalanche at Uttarakhand. Rescue operations are on & we are in touch with SDRF Uttarakhand.”

Its worthy to note that the avalanche struck at an altitude of around 17,000 feet around 8.45 am when the team of 34 trainee mountaineers and seven instructors from Uttarkashi-based NIM was returning after summiting.

As per the Director General of Police (DGP) Uttarakhand, altogether 10 bodies have been recovered till now. Moreover, around 20 are still missing and search operation is underway.
