Commemorating the ’68th National Wildlife Week 2022′, a consultative workshop of churches, NGOs and media on “Wildlife Conservation” was held today at Chief Wildlife Warden Conference Hall of MINECO in Aizawl.
The workshop was chaired by Liankima Lailung, IFS (Retd) with keynote address from R. K. Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forests (HoFF).
Lalnunzira, IFS, DCF (WL), Aizawl and Field Director of Dampa Tiger reserve gave a presentation on the “Mammals of Mizoram”.
The presentation indicated that the northeastern state has 8 species of primates, 8 species of carnivores, and 16 species of small carnivores. There are 2 species of Canids, 2 species of Ursids and 7 species of Herbivores; with the Red Serow as the state animal. Besides, the state also records 8 species of Fossoreals and 11 species of Arboreals.
Mizoram also has the largest population density of clouded leopard; with 5.14 per 100 square km of clouded leopard found in Dampa Tiger Reserve. The Reserve is also home to an abundant population of Malayan Sun bears.
Meanwhile, the workshop has also witnessed a group discussion about the role of the media in wildlife conservation and the importance of a cordial relationship between media professionals and wildlife and forest officials.
The need for an annual training for journalists in wildlife conservation and visits to various wildlife reserves were also covered.
