Uttarakhand Avalanche : Body Of Meghalaya-Based Mountaineer – Tiklu Jyrwa Arrives In Shillong

The body of Tiklu Jyrwa – a member of the Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA), who passed away during an avalanche that struck Uttarkashi last week, have arrived at his residence in Shillong on Sunday night.

Jyrwa, was listed among one of the trainee mountaineers and instructors from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), who were reported ‘missing’ in the avalanche, while returning from Mount Draupadi Ka Danda II.

According to a senior government official, “The body of Tiklu was identified by his brother-in-law, Wallambok Lyngdoh, and it was then brought along with another mountaineer from Assam.”

Wallambok is the general secretary of the MeSCMA and a professional mountaineer himself. Tiklu is survived by his wife and two children.

Its worthy to note that Jyrwa was selected earlier this year to participate in a basic mountaineering course at the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) at Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh.

As per an official statement issued by the NIM, “The course arrived at Base Camp on September 25. As per the training schedule on October 4, the course moved for High Altitude Navigation and height gain to Mount Draupadi ka Danda-II (5670m) at 4.00 am while returning back from the mountain peak the Advance Mountaineering Course was met with an avalanche occurred above camp-1 in which 34 trainees and 7 mountaineering instructors were caught under avalanche at 08:45 hrs.”
