Gyandip Borgohain (35), a tourism entrepreneur based in Demow of Assam’s Sivasagar district were mercilessly tortured in Moran Police station for several hours by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Moran Police Station – Bijoy Daimari, along with three civilians, identified as – Manab Hazarika, Papu Dowerah and Dudul Lekharu.

According to sources, Borgohain allegedly claimed that police officials had abducted the operator and his team; thereby violently abusing them with guns and police batons.

However, addressing the mediapersons, the Moran OC stated that his wife was allegedly eve-teased and assaulted at a restaurant on October 7 by the members of Borgohain’s team and his pals.

In response to the incident, the Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police (SP) – Shwetank Mishra asserted that a departmental enquiry will be constituted against Daimary for the atrocities against the youths. Meanwhile, a case has also been filed in this connection at the Demow Police Station.

Several local bodies including the All Assam Tai-Ahom Students’ Union (AATASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Adivasi Students’ Union (AAASU), All Deori Students’ Union (ADSU), All Mech-Kachari Yuba Parishad (AMKYP) among others have staged demonstration in Demow and Moran, calling-for the immediate arrest of police officials and the civilians involved in the offence.

The director of Kite Manja Tours – Borgohain has been organizing camps for trekkers and festival goers across Northeast India for several years.

This year too, following a wonderful camping in Ziro, they were travelling back to the hometown on October 7 night. “Since we were running late and I didn’t want to bother my family through dinner preparations for the whole team, I called two friends hailing from Demow – Partha Jyoti Mech and Simanta Deori, to help me find a restaurant that would be able to feed my crew. The group had dinner at Pacifica Inn – a brand-new restaurant along the highway, and then travelled towards my residence at Demow,” – Borgohain mentioned.

“Some policemen barged into my residence at midnight and instructed us to reach the Demow Police Station. I was asked to bring my own vehicle, and while on the way to Demow Police Station, only 800 metres from my residence, I was abruptly informed to proceed towards the Moran Police Station in Dibrugarh district. Before I could even inquire about the matter, one of the vehicles rushed with some of my team members in it.” – the tour operator told EastMojo.

According to the statement of Borgohain and his friend – Partha Mech, the team members were all lined-up at the police station. Within a fraction of seconds, the officials along with the two civilians started to assault them, without even explaining the cause for the sudden aggression.

“While brutally torturing us in the police station, one of the accused civilians accompanying the policemen claimed that someone from our team misbehaved with the OC’s wife.” – added Borgohain.

On October 8 morning, Daimari’s wife came to the police station, presumably for identification. Even though they spoke in Bodo, the woman shaking her head in opposition brought much relief to the victims.

“I was threatened that my career as an entrepreneur would be ruined, if I or anybody from my staff revealed the kidnapping, or else the torture videos will be distributed to every media outlet,” – Borgohain further added.

In the meantime, as protestors gathered outside the police station demanding their release, Daimari allegedly instructed Borgohain to reach to some kind of compromise.

As per Borgohain, the OC of Moran Police Station, some of the local goons, allegedly linked with oil tanker mafia gangs and illicit liquor gangs were drinking at the same restaurant, which is owned by one of the accused – Papu Dowerah. Borgohain stated that police officials recorded the molestation attempt on Daimari’s wife.

“Nothing in this video demonstrates that me or my team even had a conversation with the police official or his wife. We did not even notice them,” added Borgohain.

“I’m trying to concentrate on my next task, but it will be challenging for us to overcome the trauma. We want swift action against the accused persons,” Borgohain noted.
