The Manipur Chief Minister – N. Biren Singh today inaugurated the long-awaited ‘Chivu Maharaj Chandrakriti Memorial Park’ at Tonjang Village in Churachandpur District.
It has been inaugurated in the auspicious presence of cabinet minister – Letpao Haokip, Rajya Sabha MP – L. Sanajaoba, MLA of Kelrao Assembly Constituency – Rameshwor Meetei, MLA of Miao Assembly Constituency – Losii Dikho, among other dignitaries.
The effort seeks to commemorate the victory of Manipuri King Chandrakriti Singh over 112 Lushai chiefs, during the Lushai Expedition of 1871-72.
According to sources, the inscribed-stone at Chivu was erected during the reign of Maharaj Chandrakirti (1850-1886 CE), as a mark to commemorate the Lushai Expedition.
This site has been protected under the provision of the ‘Manipur Ancient and Historical Monuments’ and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1976′.
It may be recalled that foundation stone of the park was laid on December 19, 2017 by the Manipur CM, in memory of Maharaja Chandrakriti – a revered king of the erstwhile Kingdom of Manipur.
Meanwhile, the Manipur CM has also inaugurated the ‘Manipur Southern Cultural Centre’, which incorporates of a museum, conference hall, cottages, amphitheater, etc.
This cultural centre will provide a platform to showcase the unique history & culture of the people residing along the region.
Taking to social media platforms, the Manipur CM wrote “Delighted to be amongst the people of Beihang and inaugurate the “Chivu Chandrakirti Memorial Park” and lay the foundation stone of “Manipur Southern Cultural Centre” today. The Inscribed Stone at Chivu was erected during the reign of Maharaj Chandrakirti (1850-1886 CE) in the year 1872 CE to commemorate the Lushai Expedition. This site is protected under the provision of the Manipur Ancient and Historical Monuments and archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1976. The Manipur Southern Cultural Centre will have a museum, conference hall, cottages, amphitheatre, etc. This cultural centre will provide a platform to showcase the unique history and culture of the people of the region.”
