Agartala, October 15, 2022 : A senior official of the Tripura police is accused of defending an accused police constable for cheating two women along Santirbazar sub-division under South Tripura district.

Reportedly, the sub-divisional police officer of Santirbazar sub-division Nirupam Datta made untiring efforts to safeguard a constable posted at Baikhora police station named Mangal Saha from getting arrested for cheating two women, hailing from Santirbazar.

It is learned that the constable Mangal left his first wife and a son and was secretly living with his second wife. Later, he came to Baikhora police station and refused to recognize the second woman as his wife. Moreover, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nirupam allegedly barred Baikhora Police Station OC from taking up the case to save the accused.

Later, the helpless woman filed a case of rape against the accused in the District and Sessions Court of Belonia under South Tripura district. Constable Mangal working from Baikhora police station was arrested on Thursday after getting the court order. After the arrest, SDPO Nirupam made efforts to save the accused.

It is alleged that the sub-divisional police officer tried to get the woman to withdraw the case by showing various legal complications. After all efforts failed, accused Mangal was produced before the Belonia District and Sessions Court on Friday.

It is said that the accused has been ordered to jail for 14 days. When the media personnel of Santirbazar sub-division went to Baikhora Police Station for collecting detailed information about this matter, the SDPO clearly informed the Officer-in-Charge of Baikhora Police Station over the phone that no video footage or any information can be disclosed to the journalists.

The case registered against the accused constable is 23 of 2022 in Baikhora police station under sections 494, 417, 376 IPC. Finally, all the efforts of Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nirupam Dutta failed due to the court’s decision.
