The Meghalaya Chief Minister – Conrad Sangma today held meeting with the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to assess the damages across various districts, caused due to ‘Cyclone Sitrang’.
Advising the DCs to take a proactive approach, the Meghalaya CM discussed on strategies to ensure fast-track damage assessments.
He directed the concerned authorities to opt for utilization of drone survey in remote locations & ensure that prompt assistance is extended to the affected citizens.
Besides, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) team instructed to ensure expedite power restoration, and urged all the other Departments to work in cooperation & extend assistance, wherever required.
Taking to Twitter, the Meghalaya CM wrote “Meeting via VC with all the DCs to assess the damages in the districts due to #CycloneSitrang. Instructions given to fast track damage assessments, opt for use of drone survey in certain locations & ensure relief is extended to the affected”

Notably, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday informed that the remnant of the cyclonic storm “Sitrang” which created a deep depression over Bangladesh, has further weakened into a depression over northeast Bangladesh, north-northeast of Agartala and south-southwest of Shillong.
Taking to Twitter, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) wrote “The Depression over northeast Bangladesh and neighborhood weakened into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area and lay centered over northeast Bangladesh and adjoining Meghalaya at 0830 hrs IST of today,the 25th October. To weaken into a low pressure area during next 06 hours.”

The cyclonic storm has been impacting Garo Hills since Monday afternoon, and the intensity of the winds has caused power outages in Ampati, Tura, Dalu, and even Baghmara. It has caused extensive damage to numerous locations, uprooting trees and snapping electrical wires.
Meanwhile, the disaster management teams remain on high alert while field teams of the (Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited) MeECL power distribution are restoring power lines.
The state administration instructed the concerned authorities to shut educational institutions on Tuesday across four districts of Meghalaya bordering Bangladesh. These districts are East and West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills.
