In an unfortunate incident, the Tholiru stream near Challou river at Poi village in the northern part of Manipur’s Ukhrul district has claimed the lives of two women.
According to sources, the two women from Poi village, namely RS. Ngamreila (30), wife of RS. Varechung and RK. Ramreila (34), wife of RK. Mathotmi was carried away while crossing the Tholiru stream near the Challou river of Poi village.
The duo washed away by the stream while returning from their paddy field. The incident occurred on Monday evening. Ukhrul district reported heavy downpours in the last days as Cyclone Sitrang slammed the Northeast region, triggering floods in various areas, including Bangladesh. The last part of October and November is a time for the farmers to harvest their paddy.
Notably, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday informed that the remnant of the cyclonic storm “Sitrang” which created a deep depression over Bangladesh, has further weakened into a depression over northeast Bangladesh, north-northeast of Agartala and south-southwest of Shillong.
Taking to Twitter, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) wrote “The Depression over northeast Bangladesh and neighborhood weakened into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area and lay centered over northeast Bangladesh and adjoining Meghalaya at 0830 hrs IST of today,the 25th October. To weaken into a low pressure area during next 06 hours.”
