Agartala, October 25, 2022 : A businessman in the remotest corner of Tripura received an extortion notice demanding Rs 5 lakh from the banned militant outfit – National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) on October 22.
The businessman Swapan Debnath owns a shop at Jagabandhu Para in Gandacherra sub-division under Dhalai district, which is about 115 KMs away from Agartala city.
It is reported that a letter written on the pad of the proscribed enemy organization “NLFT” was left late at night in the shop of Swapan Debnath, a businessman of Jagabandhu Para Bazar in the Gandacherra police station area. Last Saturday, suddenly the owner of the shop Swapan Debnath saw a paper lying at a corner of the shop. With that paper in hand, it can be seen that in the letter written in the name of Swapan Debnath, NLFT, a banned enemy organization, has demanded Rs 5 lakh as a contribution. The letter also stated that the money should be settled within one week of receipt of the letter.
As soon as the incident came to light, Gandacherra Police Station OC Palash Datta and Sub-Divisional Police Officer Bapi Debbarma went to Swapan Debnath’s shop at Jagabandhu Para and brought the letter. When Swapan Debnath was contacted about this, he admitted the incident. The police of Gandacherra police station have started an investigation into the matter.
A police official said the letter pad belonged to the banned militant outfit – “NLFT”, but there were many doubts about the writings. Some evil person may have done that incident in the name of NLFT.
Claiming investigation is underway, SDPO Bapi Debbarma on Tuesday afternoon told Northeast Today “The extortion notice is fake as the banned militant’s outfit pad is a coloured photocopy where the amount is written addressing the businessman Swapan Debnath. However, an investigation is going on, we will reach the conclusion soon.”
