Along with Pathaw, the state government also handed over cash awards of Rs 6.5 lakh to 10 other athletes who represented the country and brought laurels in various international arm wrestling and bodybuilding competitions.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister – Conrad Sangma in presence of the Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs – Banteidor Lyngdoh, felicitated the sports achievers who represented the country in various international Arm-wrestling and bodybuilding competitions on Wednesday.

The event was organized by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs to felicitate medal winners and athletes, who represented the country at the XLIII World Arm-wrestling Championship, XXIV World Para-Arm-wrestling Championship at Turkey, PRO-AM Universe Championship in Bangkok, and the WFF PRO AM Asia Pacific in Vietnam.

Addressing the gathering, the Meghalaya CM congratulated the medal winners and participants who had brought laurels to the state and the nation by winning the international championships.

Acknowledging the effort of the sportspersons, the Chief Minister noted that “winners are not made overnight, but it is only through hard work and perseverance that we can achieve success.”

The Chief Minister added that the state government is working with the right intentions to nurture and support the sportspersons through various interventions and create the right ecosystem for their growth to compete at the national and international levels.

“We as a Government are taking the right steps to nurture our sports persons and athletes so that in the coming days, our athletes can compete with the best, not only at the National but International events as well. With the proper strategy and planning, we are confident that all the investments that we have been making today will bear some fruits and results in the days to come. Things just don’t happen because we want it to happen, you need a strategy, you need a policy, and you need a system in place to achieve it,” he said.

He added that the formulation of the sports and youth policy has provided the blueprint and instructed to develop sports infrastructure in the state.

Emphasizing better infrastructure, the Chief Minister reiterated that the state government sanctioned Rs 500 crores for the development of sports infrastructure in Meghalaya, and part of these investments are being utilized for building better facilities and stadiums for the state’s sportspersons.

He hoped that in the future, better sports facilities can be provided to the Districts, Subdivisions, and blocks across the State.

“We may have all the policies, we may have the right system in place but if we don’t have the infrastructure to help and allow athletes and sportspersons to practice then things fall flat and hence a comprehensive plan and strategy has been developed to provide a better state of the art facilities in the State,” he said.

The Chief Minister also said that to motivate and encourage sportspersons, the State Government has increased the cash awards for sports achievers of the state.
