The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) warned that if the central and state government failed to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, insurgency might again register an escalation in Meghalaya.
Addressing a meeting, the HNAM president – Lamphrang Kharbani, said, “The state will witness the rise of militancy if the Centre and state governments remain adamant in their attitude towards the demand for ILP implementation and also the inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India.”
He claimed that it would impact the development and the state’s peace and tranquility.
“Therefore, if the central government considers Meghalaya, as part of India, it should not hesitate to approve the demand for ILP just like it did to other states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram,” he said.
Kharbani said the other demands of the five pressure groups under the Save Hynniewtrep Movement include CBI probe into the killing of ex-HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, resolving unemployment issues, among others.
