President – Droupadi Murmu Arrives In Mizoram On Two-Day Visit; Inaugurates IIMC-North Eastern Regional Campus At Aizawl

President Droupadi Murmu, who is on a two-day visit to Mizoram arrived in Aizawl on Thursday. She was received by Governor – Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati and Chief Minister – Zoramthanga.

The President was accorded a guard of honor on her first visit to Mizoram after assuming office.

The President virtually inaugurated the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) North Eastern Regional Campus. IIMC is an autonomous Institution under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B).

The President awarded Doctor of Philosophy to 38 scholars, Master of Philosophy – 6, Master’s Degree -469, Master’s Professional (MLIS,MJMC, MBA, MBATH, M. Tech.,M. Pharm, MCA, IMBA, MSW, M.Ed) – 103, Bachelor’s Degree – 109, Bachelor’s Professional (B. Tech., B. Pharm, Nursing, OOT, RIT, MLT, LLB, BBA, B. Arch, B.Voc, BSW, B.Ed MMP, B.Ed.) 107. Amongst these, there were 52 Gold Medalist and 16 Book Prize Winner.

After gracing the 17th convocation ceremony of the Mizoram University in Aizawl, the President is likely to interact with woman students, and members of self-help groups at the varsity.

She will also attend a cultural programme at Raj Bhavan in the evening. Murmu will address a special session of the Mizoram assembly at 10.15 AM on Friday before leaving the state.

The IIMC North East Campus began functioning in 2011 from a temporary building at Mizoram University. The construction work, commenced in 2015 and culminated in 2019 at a total cost of Rs 25 crores. The IIMC permanent campus on the 8 acres of land given by Mizoram University has separate Administrative and Academic buildings along with hostels and staff quarters. Since its inception, the campus offered PG Diploma courses in English Journalism. This year, the Institute takes pride in having a topper in English Journalism for the second time.

It enables the students to secure employment in reputed media organizations across the country through campus placements and their efforts. Alumnis from the reputed institution are establishing their niche in well-known media organizations like Doordarshan.

The North East Campus started PG Diploma Course in Digital Media along with two other Campuses of IIMC from the 2022-23 session. This course aimed to realize the significance of digital media in the present scenario.

The Institute expressed gratitude to all the people who have made contributions one way or the other, particularly MZU, for providing both Academic and Administrative support ever since it began functioning in the MZU Campus.

Since its inauguration in 2011, the Institute is headed by its Regional Director – LR Sailo, who has decades of experience in the field of public relations and also served as the Director of Information and Public Relations (IPR) in Mizoram Government for over twenty years.

It is worth noting that IIMC is a premiere Journalism Institute under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Inaugurated in 1965, it focused on the training needs of media professionals in the country and other developing countries. Since then, it has been functioning as a training institute for Indian Information Service and later started courses for aspiring journalists through competitive entrance examination. The IIMC has expanded and has institutionalized five regional campuses across the nation to meet the needs of media education.
