The Meghalaya High Court observed that there does not appear to be any impediment in the management of the correctional homes, but there is always room for improvement.

The HC directed the state government to consider implementing modern concepts along the under-construction correctional home at Nongstoin and the proposed correctional home in Shillong.

Hearing a PIL on November 3, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Judge W Diengdoh stated, “There may not be any immediate need for further directions, but the matter is not disposed of so that the continuing process of improvement of the conditions in the correctional homes in the State is not arrested as a result thereof.”

A copy of the report submitted by Amicus Curiae, is forwarded to the state government.

“The State is requested to look into the report and the suggestions contained therein, particularly in ensuring that modern concepts are applied in the new correctional home, which is under construction at Nongstoin and the proposed correctional home to come up around Shillong,” – the HC said.

The matter is listed on February 8, 2023.
