The Congress legislator of Hachhek Constituency – Lalrindika Ralte, has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister regarding the problem faced by areca nuts growers of his constituency.

In the letter, the MLA stated that 70% of residents within the Hachhek constituency depend on their livelihood.

Ralte added that although the Union Home Ministry has directed the state to stop the illegal import of areca nuts from Myanmar, the state government failed to take stringent measures on the matter.

He also mentioned that Assam prohibited the import of areca nuts from Myanmar.

“It creates a problem for areca nut growers of Hachhek due to the enforcement agencies of Assam’s inability to differentiate between the Desi variety grown in Mizoram and those arriving illegally from Myanmar,” Ralte added.

Lalrindika Ralte urged the PM to intervene into the matter, so that the areca nut growers of the Hachhek Constituency would have access to a better and more transparent market.
