Manipur CM Appeal Rebels To Join Mainstream As 31 Militants Lay-Down Weapons In Imphal

Altogether 31 militants belonging to different valley-based proscribed outfits on Wednesday surrendered their firearms before the Manipur Chief Minister – N Biren Singh; during the Homecoming Ceremony held at 1st MR Banquet Hall in Imphal.

The surrendered insurgents include 17 from the Kangleipak Communist Party-People’s War Group (KCP-PWG), 4 from United National Liberation Front (UNLF), 6 from People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), 3 from the Kanglei Yawol Kanba Lup (KYKL), and one from PREPAK (VC).

Meanwhile, one M16 rifle, one M4 Carbine, one Lathod gun, one single-barrel rifle, seven .32 pistols, three .22 pistols, one 12mm bore pistol, five cartridges, three Lathod shells, one Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and three live rounds has also been surrendered before the Manipur CM.

Addressing the occasion, the Manipur CM noted that Manipur and other northeastern states once viewed as insurgency-hit regions. However, specific alterations have been witnessed, since the formation of the BJP-led government under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Home Affairs & Cooperation – Amit Shah.

He mentioned that development projects initiated across the region to foster healthy relationships among different communities in the state.

The CM further added that the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) had been lifted from 15 police station limits.

Taking to Twitter, the Manipur CM wrote “I extend a hearty welcome to the 31 cadres of different UG groups for laying down their arms during a homecoming ceremony at 1 MR Banquet Hall, Imphal today. It is my firm belief that many more will return to the mainstream and join the work to build a progressive Manipur.”

“The 31 cadres of the different valley-based UG groups include 17 KCP (PWG), 4 UNLF, 6 PREPAK, 3 KYKL, and 1 PREPAK (VC).

As many as 15 arms including three Lathod shells, one lED and three live rounds were surrendered,” he further added.
