The Meghalaya Government has decided to cancel all forthcoming events, after the tense situation along the Assam-Meghalaya border clash at Mukroh.
Atleast six people were killed and several were injured in the alleged firing incident by Assam police in Mukroh, Laskein Block, Jaintia Hills district on November 22.
According to an official statement issued by the Meghalaya Chief Minister – Conrad Sangma, the list of festivals which have been called-off include the long-awaited ‘Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival’.
Internet services have been suspended in 7 districts, including – West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Home Affairs (MHA) – Lahkmen Rymbui reached Mukroh, Laskein Block, East Jaintia Hills to inspect the tragic incident & FIR has been registered by the Meghalaya Police. Rymbui interacted with the police personnel and family members of the deceased.
Sangma also announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs each to the next-of-kin of the deceased individuals.
An ex gratia compensation of ₹5 Lakh each will be released to the next of kin the deceased individuals.
The Cabinet will sit today to decide on the next course of action which the Government will take with regards to this incident.
