Guwahati, July 29, 2023: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a startling revelation on Friday, stating that the state has become a corridor for Rohingya infiltrators seeking to travel to Delhi or Kashmir.

According to investigations, some brokers based in Tripura are facilitating the illegal infiltration of Rohingya refugees into Assam. CM Sarma emphasized that merely deporting the identified Rohingya infiltrators is not enough; the police must extend their operations to Tripura, apprehend the brokers involved, and dismantle the syndicate responsible for this activity.

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of enhancing intelligence operations at all railway stations to effectively apprehend infiltrators. He specifically highlighted the need for increased vigilance in Barak Valley, comprising the districts of Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi, as it has emerged as a hub for such crimes.

CM Sarma revealed that the Rohingya community primarily utilizes the rail route to travel to other parts of the country, exploiting Assam as a transit point. Consequently, the railway police play a vital role in detecting and intercepting these infiltrators. He urged authorities to strengthen intelligence efforts at all railway stations, from Barak Valley to Dhubri, to prevent not only infiltration but also other economic crimes.

The Rohingya, originally from Myanmar, faced persecution in their homeland’s Rakhine state, prompting a mass exodus to Bangladesh starting in August 2017. Many of them subsequently entered India from Bangladesh.

As Assam grapples with the challenge of being exploited as a pathway for Rohingya infiltrators, CM Sarma’s call for robust intelligence gathering and swift action aims to stem this unlawful activity and bolster security measures in the state.
