Guwahati, August 07, 2023: Assam police made significant progress in combating cybercrime by apprehending three individuals involved in such activities on Monday.
The arrests took place in Siliguri, West Bengal, where the accused were taken into custody. Their possessions yielded objectionable items that were seized by the authorities.
The urgency of the arrests arose after a retired government employee from Pathsala experienced a substantial financial loss of approximately RS 30 lakh due to falling victim to cyber fraud. Following the complaint filed by the retiree, the police quickly acted and managed to capture the three suspects from Siliguri.
The successful operation was carried out by the Barpeta police team, who diligently tracked down and arrested the individuals involved in the cyber fraud. The trio, identified as Tamej Uddin, Mustakim Mia, and Afjal Ansari, hailed from Deoghar district in Jharkhand.
In addition to arresting the suspects, the police team successfully recovered 7 mobile phones and 11 ATM cards from their possession. The investigation into the matter revealed that these cyber criminals were operating from Jamtara district, also known as the phishing capital of India. Jamtara has unfortunately become a hub for cyber fraud gangs that entice innocent people with enticing deals, only to exploit them through smart devices.
Furthermore, it was discovered that some youths from Kalgachia and Baghbar of Barpeta were directly involved with the cyber gangs operating in Jamtara, according to sources from the police.
The accused individuals will face legal proceedings as they are set to appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Barpeta today. This decisive action taken by the Assam police is a crucial step towards combating cybercrime and protecting innocent individuals from falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.
