Guwahati, August 07, 2023: The Supreme Court will resume its hearings on petitions concerning the violence in Manipur on Monday. The court has taken a serious stance on the matter, questioning the investigation carried out by the Manipur police in relation to the ethnic violence in the state.
The court expressed dissatisfaction with the police’s efforts, calling them “lethargic” and even stating that there is an “absolute breakdown of law and order and machinery of the State.”
To ensure accountability, the Apex court has asked the Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur to personally appear during the hearing. In addition, the court has directed the DGP to submit tabulated data of FIRs, categorized based on the nature of offenses related to the violence.
On a related note, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta provided important information to the court. He stated that a total of 6,523 FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence, with 11 of these being related to crimes against women and children. This data was presented as part of a status report submitted to the court.
The Supreme Court’s upcoming hearing on Monday will determine the future course of action regarding this crucial case.
