Agartala, December 09, 2023: Tripura’s Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath played a pivotal role in the 25th North Eastern Energy Committee (NERPC) meeting held in Kolkata on December 9, 2023. The event, overseen by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), focused on addressing electricity-related concerns across North East India.

During the session, critical decisions were made to bolster the state’s power infrastructure. The expedited completion of the 400 KV sub-station in Suryamaninagar was approved, facilitating a direct connection from the Palatana power generation station through a 400 KV transmission line. This move is expected to enhance the reliability and stability of power transmission.

Additionally, the meeting emphasized the swift completion of the 132 KV double circuit line from Monarchak to Suryamaninagar, ensuring a direct route for power from the Monarchak power generation plant. Measures such as installing surge arresters on high-power transmission lines were proposed to safeguard against lightning damage during rainstorms.

To enhance emergency response capabilities, high-capacity mobile sub-stations will be integrated into the power transmission management system. This strategic move aims to restore the power system promptly in case of issues with existing sub-stations. The integration of mobile towers in power transmission management was also discussed for emergency-based replacement of damaged transmission towers.

Furthermore, the meeting highlighted the importance of modern equipment for maintaining high-capacity transmission lines, ensuring uninterrupted customer service. The use of drones for monitoring high-power transmission lines and the establishment of a new State Load Despatch Center (SLDC) at East Kanchanbari in Kumarghat as a backup to the Agartala SLDC were announced.

In his address, Minister Ratanlal Nath reiterated Tripura’s commitment to the progress of the overall power system. He outlined the state’s special efforts towards clean and green energy projects, aiming for zero carbon emissions by 2070. Notable achievements include the installation of solar street lights, solar pumps, and solar rooftops, along with plans for a 130 MW floating solar power plant at Dumboor Reservoir.

To support these initiatives, the North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP) under the supervision of Power Grid Corporation, with assistance from the Government of India and World Bank, was discussed. The Power Grid Corporation was urged to expedite the construction of new transmission lines and substations under this project.

Additionally, a significant agreement worth Rs 2275 crore with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) was highlighted, aimed at enhancing power distribution efficiency in Tripura. The comprehensive renovation of power projects in Rokhiya and Gomati districts is expected to double the installed capacity.

Under ADB-funded projects, modernization and reliability improvement in the power distribution sector were emphasized, incorporating technologies such as Covered Conductor, High Voltage Distribution System, Fault Passage Indicator, Ring Man Unit (RMU), Transformer Testing Lab, and Smart Metering. The Minister also announced a project for laying 11 KV underground power cables in Agartala city, aiming to replace overhead distribution lines with underground cables for reliable power supply.

In the era of the digital revolution, the Minister addressed the crucial issue of cybersecurity in the power sector. Measures have been taken at the State Load Despatch Center to ensure cybersecurity, in compliance with the Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) mandate for cybersecurity in the power sector.

In attendance at the meeting were Debashish Sarkar, Managing Director, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited, and Ranjan Debbarman, General Manager, Tripura Power Transmission Corporation Limited.
