Agartala, April 01, 2024: In a significant development showcasing Tripura’s rich cultural heritage and indigenous craftsmanship, two emblematic products of the state, the revered Tripura Sundari Peda, also known as Matabari Peda, and the traditional attire Rignai, have been granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) certification under the food and textile categories, respectively.
Expressing his elation, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha emphasized the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative in fostering prosperity. He lauded the recognition of these products as a testament to Tripura’s cultural legacy and economic empowerment.
“This milestone achievement underscores the significance of our local produce and indigenous craftsmanship on the global stage. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Matabari Mahila Cluster Level Bahumukhi Sambay Samity Limited of Udaipur and Dewanbari Mahila Cluster Bahumukhi Sambay Samity Limited for their dedication in preserving our heritage and promoting self-reliance,” remarked Dr. Saha.
With this latest addition, the tally of GI-tagged products from Tripura now stands at four, including the renowned queen variety of pineapple and the traditional tribal attire Risha. However, the state’s application for the GI tag for Jackfruit faced rejection.
The certification for the two esteemed products was officially announced on March 30, 2024, valid until March 2033, marking a pivotal moment in Tripura’s cultural and economic landscape.
Matabari Peda, a revered milk-based sweet offering to the deity at the Tripura Sundari temple, holds profound religious significance. Meanwhile, Rignai, an integral part of Tripura’s indigenous communities’ attire, reflects the intricate craftsmanship and cultural heritage of the region.
As custodians of tradition, Matabari Mahila Cluster Level Bahumukhi Samabay Samiti and Dewanbari Mahila Cluster Bahamukhi Samabay Samity played pivotal roles as applicants for the GI certification, facilitated by Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission.
The recognition of these iconic products not only celebrates Tripura’s rich cultural heritage but also underscores the state’s commitment to preserving and promoting its indigenous traditions on a global scale.
