Agartala, May 20, 2024: In a significant crackdown on the local drug trade, Tripura police have arrested five individuals for their involvement in selling narcotics. The operation led to the seizure of 14 grams of brown sugar, estimated to have a market value of approximately Rs 70,000.
Acting on confidential tips, police officials conducted a targeted raid last night at the Gandhi School premises in Agartala city, a known hotspot for drug-related activities. The swift police action resulted in the apprehension of three suspects including the alleged ringleader Tannakar Chowdhury, who were caught in the act of selling the illegal substance.
Further investigation and interrogation of the detainees enabled the police to extend their operation to the Women’s College premises, where two additional suspects were taken into custody. The police also confiscated two motorcycles, Rs 25,000 in cash, and five mobile phones, all believed to be linked to the illicit drug operations.
Authorities have registered a case under the NDPS Act against the individuals, who are identified as Tannakar Chowdhury, Ajay Pal, Arjun Sarkar, Piyush Sarkar, and Abhijit Saha. They were produced before the court on Monday, where the police sought remand for further questioning.
