31-year-old Amritpal Singh, the leader of ‘Waris Punjab De’, also the newly elected Member of Parliament from Khadoor Sahib, Punjab, is set to be sworn in today amidst significant public anticipation. As per news reports, Singh has been transported to Delhi via a special military aircraft in the early hours amid strict security measures for his swearing-in. A contingent from Punjab police is said to have accompanied him to ensure a smooth transition to the capital. He has been lodged in the Dibrugarh Central Jail since April last year.
Singh has been granted a 4-day parole starting July 5 specifically for this purpose, allowing him to take the oath of office. During his stay in Delhi, Singh is permitted to meet with his family, but under strict conditions outlined by the parole order issued by the district magistrate of Amritsar, Punjab. Notably, neither Singh nor any of his relatives are allowed to make any public statements to the media. The parole order, which includes 10 specific conditions, prohibits any recording or circulation of statements made by Singh in electronic or any other form. Additionally, he is barred from engaging in any activities that could be construed as detrimental to national security.
Singh’s electoral victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where he triumphed as an independent candidate over Congress’ Kulbir Singh Zira by a substantial margin of 1,97,120 votes, underscores his growing influence and support among the electorate of Khadoor Sahib. His journey from a controversial figure to a parliamentary representative highlights the evolving dynamics of politics in Punjab and beyond.
