Agartala, July 05, 2024: Amidst growing concerns over rising HIV/AIDS infections among all age groups, the call for heightened awareness organized at Muktadhara auditorium in Agartala city on Friday. A pivotal workshop convened media stakeholders to address the pressing need to combat this deadly disease. Organized jointly by the Tripura AIDS Control Society, Tripura Journalists Union and Tripura Web Media Forum, the event underscored a unified stance against the epidemic.
“Intravenous drug use remains a significant contributor to HIV/AIDS infections,” emphasized Health Director Dr. Sanjib Debbarma during the workshop. “Public awareness is crucial in preventing the spread of this virus,” he asserted, highlighting the modes of transmission: “HIV/AIDS is transmitted through infected needles, organ transplants, and unprotected sexual contact, as well as from mother to child.”
Dr. Debbarma expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of intravenous drug-related infections, noting the severe impact on immune systems and overall health. “Awareness is our best defense,” he urged, particularly stressing the importance of educating mothers to safeguard their children against HIV/AIDS.
Echoing these sentiments, Director of Family Welfare and Prevention Department Dr. Anjan Das underscored the state’s commitment to prevention efforts. “Collaboration across departments is essential,” he affirmed, detailing ongoing health initiatives aimed at curbing infections. Dr. Das pinpointed intravenous drug use as a critical factor in the disease’s spread, underscoring the need for comprehensive intervention strategies.
Highlighting the symptoms and preventive measures, Dr. Das outlined a toll-free hotline (1097) for HIV/AIDS inquiries, ensuring accessible information dissemination.
Director of Information and Cultural Affairs Department Bimbisar Bhattacharya emphasized the role of education in mitigating the state’s rising infection rates. “Gender disparities exacerbate transmission risks,” he pointed out, advocating for media-driven educational campaigns as a primary preventive measure.
The workshop drew participation of Tripura Journalists Union President Pranab Sarkar and Tripura Web Media Forum Secretary Abhishek Dey. Project Director of the AIDS Control Society Dr. Samarpita Datta and numerous journalists contributed insights during detailed discussions on effective journalistic approaches to enhance public awareness and combat HIV/AIDS transmission.
As efforts intensify, the workshop concluded with a unified resolve to leverage media influence in the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS, highlighting education as the cornerstone of preventive action in Tripura.
