Agartala, July 24, 2024: The Tripura Human Rights Commission has served notices to the Director General of Police (DGP) and the District Magistrate (DM) of Dhalai in response to recent violence in Gandatwisa under Dhalai district. The Commission has sought detailed reports on the actions taken against individuals involved in arson and looting that occurred earlier this month.
DGP Amitabh Ranjan and Dhalai DM Saju Vaheed have been instructed to submit their findings within three weeks. The notices come in the wake of a July 12 incident where a mob looted and set fire to several houses following the death of a 19-year-old man during a clash between two groups in Dhalai district.
Tripura Human Rights Commission Chairperson Justice S.C. Das emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. “Before initiating a formal inquiry, the Commission requires a report from the DGP, Tripura, detailing the actions taken by law enforcement to apprehend the offenders involved in this grave incident. The report should also clarify whether any criminal cases have been registered, the relevant penal sections, and if any arrests have been made,” stated Justice Das in the notice.
Additionally, the rights panel has directed the DM of Dhalai district to conduct a civil agency inquiry into the incident. The DM has been asked to report on the measures taken to rehabilitate the victims and restore them to their previous living conditions.
“Inaction or negligence by public servants in preventing human rights violations is actionable,” noted Justice Das, underscoring the importance of accountability. The preliminary reports are required within three weeks to determine further actions.
The Commission will review the matter on August 8.
