Guwahati, July 26: In a historic achievement, Assam’s Charaideo Maidam has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list under the category of Cultural Property. This recognition marks a significant milestone for the state and the country, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of India’s northeastern region.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his delight on social media, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, and the people of Assam for this achievement.
The ‘Moidams’, unique burial mounds characterized by pyramid-like structures, date back to the Tai-Ahom dynasty and hold profound historical and cultural significance. This inclusion not only enhances the recognition of India’s diverse cultural heritage but also underscores the need to preserve the unique cultural landmarks of the northeastern region.
As the first cultural site from India’s northeastern region to receive this honor, the recognition of the ‘Moidams’ paves the way for more cultural sites from the region to gain international acclaim and protection.
