Agartala, August 09: In a landmark initiative aimed at revolutionizing India’s railway infrastructure, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, announced the launch of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) during a recent parliamentary session. The ambitious scheme, which envisions the continuous development of railway stations with a long-term perspective, is set to significantly enhance the passenger experience and contribute to the socio-economic growth of the regions involved.

“The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a visionary project that seeks to uplift our railway stations, making them not just transit points but integral parts of the cities they serve,” said Minister Vaishnaw, emphasizing the holistic approach of the initiative.

The scheme involves the preparation of comprehensive Master Plans, to be implemented in phases, with a focus on improving station amenities such as access, circulating areas, waiting halls, toilets, and lift/escalator installations. Additionally, the scheme prioritizes cleanliness, free Wi-Fi, and the establishment of kiosks promoting local products under the ‘One Station One Product’ initiative. Enhancements to passenger information systems, the introduction of Executive Lounges, designated spaces for business meetings, and improved landscaping are also integral components of the project.

Further, the ABSS aims to modernize station buildings, integrate them seamlessly with both sides of their respective cities, and promote multimodal connectivity. Special attention is being given to amenities for Divyangjans (persons with disabilities), with sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions such as ballast-less tracks being considered where feasible. In the long term, the scheme also envisions transforming stations into vibrant city centers.

A total of 1,324 stations have been selected for redevelopment under this scheme, based on proposals received from Zonal Railways. These stations are primarily located in major cities and towns, ensuring widespread impact across the country. Notably, the Northeast Frontier Railway alone will see 91 stations undergo redevelopment, reflecting the government’s commitment to inclusive development.

Indian Railways is dedicated to ensuring that its stations are accessible to all, particularly persons with disabilities, in line with the “Sugamya Bharat Mission” or ‘Accessible India Campaign’. The official Gazette of India has notified guidelines for the accessibility of railway stations, which include essential facilities like entrance ramps, accessible parking, low-height ticket counters, help booths, and Braille signage, among others. These measures aim to make railway stations more user-friendly for all passengers, particularly those with visual and mobility impairments.

“The upgradation of our railway stations under this scheme is not just about improving infrastructure; it’s about creating new opportunities,” Minister Vaishnaw remarked. “These upgraded stations will serve as hubs of socio-economic activity, fostering connectivity and driving economic growth in the regions they serve.”

The comprehensive upgradation of these stations is expected to create new employment avenues and business opportunities, positioning the stations as focal points of economic activity and contributing to the overall growth of the Indian economy.
