Agartala, August 13, 2024: In a shocking incident, English teacher Abhijit Dey from the Poultry Road area of Udaipur was brutally beaten by the family of a female student. The assault led to his death at Agartala GB Hospital, causing a massive uproar on social media across the state. The incident has put immense pressure on the police, with even the state’s Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and Finance minister Pranajit Singha Roy closely monitoring the situation.
Despite the public outcry, only one arrest has been made so far in connection with Abhijit’s death. However, Abhijit’s wife insists that many more individuals were involved in the attack.
On Tuesday afternoon, Tripura Pradesh Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman visited Abhijit’s residence near the National Highway side of Rajarshi Kala Kendra in Udaipur under Gomati district. Barman was accompanied by District Congress President Titon Pal and other Congress leaders and workers, and talked with Abhijit’s grieving wife.
Abhijit’s wife made a startling revelation to Barman, alleging that a ransom of Rs 30 lakh was demanded from Abhijit on the night of the incident by the girl’s family. Barman, after hearing the details, expressed his concerns to the media. “Abhijit died as a result of this heinous act at the worker’s house in the Udaipur Poultry Road area. The police have only arrested one person so far, but why haven’t they requested remand?” he questioned.
Barman further criticized the police stating, “The police have a belt around their neck. They are always on their knees. As a result, such events are not getting any speed.”
Sources indicate that the initial investigating officer in Abhijit’s case has been removed, and the second officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station has taken over the investigation. Barman proceeded to Agartala after his visit to Abhijit’s house, while Congress workers led by Udaipur District Congress President Titon Pal surrounded the Udaipur Radha Kishorepur police station.
On that day, neither the OC Babul Das nor the second OC was present at the station. Consequently, Congress leaders held a meeting with another police officer in the OC’s room, demanding the arrest of all accused within the next 24 hours. They warned that failure to do so would result in a 24-hour shutdown in Udaipur.
The Udaipur Radha Kishorepur police station is under intense scrutiny, with many questioning the slow pace of the investigation. “The police of Udaipur police station, who have received the President’s colours, seem to be under some pressure,” Barman remarked.
The tragic death of Abhijit Dey has not only shaken the community but also highlighted the urgent need for swift justice and accountability in Tripura.
