Silchar, August 21: A disturbing incident of sexual harassment has come to light in Assam’s Silchar district, where a female research scholar of Assam University was allegedly harassed by an auto-rickshaw driver on August 19.
The student, who was returning home from college, boarded an auto-rickshaw driven by Badrujaman Farooq. Despite her initial reluctance, she was asked to sit in the front seat, where Farooq allegedly attempted to sexually harass her, exposing himself midway through the ride. The student escaped and reported the incident to the police and college authorities.
Fellow students and the University student union launched a manhunt, tracking down Farooq on Tuesday night and handing him over to the police. The accused, a resident of Bakirnagar in Cachar, is currently in custody.
The incident has sparked tension on the college campus, with students demanding that the local administration ensure their safety. The police are investigating the matter and taking necessary action against the accused.
