Agartala, August 26: The Department of Telecommunications has made significant strides in restoring phone and internet services in Tripura, which was devastated by unprecedented floods. Despite the challenges, networks like BSNL, Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone have successfully restored over 94% of services.
The torrential rains that hit Tripura from August 19 to August 23 caused extensive damage to telecom infrastructure, resulting in widespread service outages. However, swift intervention by the Department of Telecommunications and telecom service providers ensured quick restoration of connectivity.
The DoT closely monitored the situation, coordinating with its North East LSAs and telecom providers. The local DoT team in Tripura worked in tandem with the State Administration, State Disaster Management unit, and telecom providers to restore services promptly.
To further facilitate communication, Intra-Circle Roaming was launched in Tripura from August 22-27, allowing customers to connect to any available network. Telecom service providers replaced damaged equipment, enabling residents and rescue teams to stay connected.
To support affected customers, telecom providers offered extended validity of prepaid plans, free mobile data, and unlimited calling. A 30-day bill payment extension was also announced for post-paid connections. These measures have significantly aided the rescue mission and residents during this challenging period
