Guwahati, Aug 28: The Centre has directed the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to issue Aadhaar cards to 935,682 people in Assam who had been waiting for their biometric IDs since 2019.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the development at a press conference on Wednesday, expressing gratitude to the Centre for resolving the long-pending issue.

The beneficiaries had submitted their biometrics between February 2019 and August 2024 but were unable to obtain Aadhaar cards due to the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.

CM Sarma highlighted the State government’s persistent efforts to resolve the issue, including the formation of a cabinet sub-committee, discussions with various organizations, and repeated requests to the Centre.

The Centre’s directive, issued on August 27, 2024, paves the way for the issuance of Aadhaar cards to the affected individuals, bringing relief to a significant segment of the population.
