Eviction Drive Turns Violent: 2 Dead, 33 Injured In Assam’s Kamrup District

Guwahati, September 13: At least 33 people were injured and two lost their lives in a intense confrontation between state authorities and alleged encroachers during an eviction drive at Sonapur in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district on Thursday.

Assam police opened fire on the violent mob, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, after government officials and police personnel were attacked with sharp weapons, sticks, and stones.

22 government officials, including a magistrate and over 10 police personnel, were injured in the assault. A police vehicle was also severely damaged.

Police resorted to authorised use of force, resulting in 13 injuries, including the two fatalities.

Revenue authorities have been carrying out an eviction drive at the government land in the notified tribal belt of Sonapur Revenue Circle since September 9, 2024, clearing 248 bighas of land and removing 237 illegally constructed structures.

Guwahati police have been directed to identify and take lawful action against miscreants involved in the attack. Assam DGP GP Singh stated that the conspiracy behind the attack will also be investigated.
