Itanagar, Oct 15: The Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) and the Arunachal Press Club (APC) have condemned the reported harassment and attempted assault of journalist Toram Melong, who works for Hills News in Pasighat. This incident occurred on Sunday while Melong was shopping for a birthday gift at Medical Charali, accompanied by his wife.

In his formal complaint, Melong detailed that three individuals verbally assaulted him after recognizing him as a reporter. The situation escalated when two of the assailants physically attacked him, one of whom was reportedly intoxicated. During the altercation, they also seized Melong’s cell phone and made attempts to assault his wife in a public setting.

Melong subsequently filed a formal FIR at the Pasighat Police Station in East Siang district on Monday.

The APUWJ and APC, in a joint statement, expressed serious concern regarding the attack, labeling such acts as unacceptable in a democratic society. They urged the Police Department to prioritize the safety of journalists and ensure that legal action is taken against the offenders. “The role of journalists in highlighting critical issues is vital, and their protection is paramount. Any intimidation or violence directed towards them undermines the freedom of the press and the principles of democracy,” the statement emphasized. The Pasighat Press Club also joined in the condemnation, calling for immediate action from local authorities.
