Shillong, Oct 15: The Meghalaya government has sought Rs 600 crore from the Centre to improve the functioning of its Social Welfare Department, Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced on Monday.
Lyngdoh, after reviewing the department’s functioning and funding, identified areas requiring intervention, including enhancing service conditions for contractual employees and upgrading technology.
The department handles sensitive cases through women and child helplines operating 24/7. Lyngdoh praised the child helpline’s 90% success rate in resolving cases, with real-time updates from districts.
To address deficits, Lyngdoh plans to take matters to the cabinet and relevant ministries. The department will integrate its information system with the secretariat to improve case resolution and response times.
Lyngdoh emphasized the department’s positive impact, citing instances of immediate support for domestic violence victims. He acknowledged the dedication of young social workers and the department’s tireless efforts to serve society.
The minister aims to further strengthen the department, ensuring timely intervention in sensitive cases and improving overall services.
