Agartala, October 16, 2024: In a worrying repeat of the Tripura’s Kadamtala incident, tensions have flared once again in Panisagar’s Pekuchhara area under North district, where ethnic tensions between communities have become increasingly volatile. The local administration is now on high alert following the demolition of a Shiva temple late Monday night by alleged miscreants. This act has sparked fear and anger, prompting an urgent response from security forces.
In light of the recent incident, a large contingent of police and the 13th Battalion of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) has been deployed to the area to maintain order and prevent further escalation. “We are taking all necessary measures to ensure that the situation remains under control. The presence of additional security personnel is aimed at reassuring the community and preventing any potential outbreak of violence,” stated a police official at the scene.
The destruction of the temple has led to retaliatory acts, with local residents reportedly targeting a mosque early Tuesday morning. “The community is on edge, and any incident can provoke a strong reaction,” a local resident remarked. As news of the temple demolition spread, fear and unrest rippled through the surrounding areas, necessitating swift action from law enforcement.
Superintendent of Police for the North District Bhanupada Chakraborty promptly arrived at the location to assess the situation. Despite the heightened tensions, he confirmed that the police were able to bring the situation under control. “We have deployed sufficient personnel to manage the incident, and I urge everyone to remain calm,” Chakraborty said.
In a significant move reflecting the seriousness of the unrest, Chakraborty has been suspended by higher officials within the state police and ordered to report to police headquarters. Dhalai District Superintendent of Police Abhinash Rai has been assigned additional responsibilities overseeing the North District during this tumultuous period.
In an effort to quell the unrest and prevent the spread of misinformation, internet services have been suspended in the North Tripura district for the next 72 hours. Authorities aim to maintain a calm environment while addressing the root causes of the ethnic strife that has recently resurfaced.
Local leaders and community members are urging restraint and dialogue to prevent further violence. “We must come together and address our differences without resorting to destruction,” said a community leader, emphasizing the need for peace. The situation remains tense, and residents are hopeful for a swift resolution to the conflicts that have plagued the region.
