Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Assam’s Morigaon district, is witnessing a surge in the arrival of migratory birds as the winter season sets in. The sanctuary, known for its population of one-horned rhinoceroses, has become a key stop for birds migrating from Europe, America, and the Tibetan region.
Forest officials reported that the influx of migratory birds began in late October and has continued into early November. Pranjal Baruah, Forest Ranger at Pobitora, stated that the peak migration period is expected to begin in December, with more birds anticipated compared to previous years. “Most of the birds come from European countries and the Tibetan region. We have taken all necessary precautions to ensure their protection,” Baruah said.
Last year, around 69 species of migratory birds were recorded at the sanctuary. Authorities have stepped up monitoring efforts to protect both the birds and the sanctuary’s wildlife, including the establishment of 25 anti-poaching camps and regular patrols.
The increase in migratory bird arrivals has also led to a rise in tourism. From October 14 to November 15, around 4,000 domestic and international tourists visited Pobitora, generating Rs 5 lakh in revenue. With elephant and jeep safaris available, officials expect even higher visitor numbers as the peak migration period approaches.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary continues to grow as an important wildlife conservation area and eco-tourism destination in Assam.
